HEARTLAND ADVENTURE

The month of November brings to Holmes our District 97 HEARTLAND ADVENTURE. That's right for the entire month of November the boys and girls here at Holmes will be rolling, jumping, running and gliding through one of the most fun filled activities of the school year.

The heartland adventure activity is designed to take those participating on an all out tour of our respiratory and cirulatory systems. The students while going through the adventure learn the names of the parts of the respiratory system (right atrium, tricupid valve, right venticle, etc.) that are responible for carrying oxygen throughout our bodies as well as learn the parts of the cirulatory system (left atrium, mitral valve, left ventricle, aortic valve, etc.) that are responsible for carrying blood throughout our bodies.

The students here at Holmes love this district activity. The kids actually become the air and blood flowing and travelling throughout the air and blood passageways. This activity also exposes them to just how hard our interior body parts and organs work for us and why it is very important to love our interior perhaps a little more than our exterior.

Parents should your child come home having misunderstood any concepts and/or examples given pertaining to the Heartland experience, please try to discern their understanding and explain correctly what your child may be attempting to share or call or email me directly for clarity.

Any questions or concerning about the HEARTLAND ADVENTURE, please feel free to contact me.

International Walk to School Day
October 5, 2011

Hello All,

The 15th annual Walk to school day is drawing near. All schools are encouraged to participate in Walk to school day. All staff and parents are asked to spend time instructing students on pedestrian and bicycle safety prior to the Oct. 5 International Walk to School Day.

The event aims to encourage safer and improved routes to school, healthier habits, and environmental concerns.

Private automobiles are the primary way students travel to school, according to several national survey.

This is the worst type of transportation ecologically compared to walking, biking and bus riding. Those student that walk and bike to school get exercise in addition to the environmental benefits.

Statewide the event is sponsored by the Illinois Safe Routes to School Program and IDOT'S Green Initiative.

Here at Holmes School on the morning of the Oct. 5 Walk to School Day Event, parents and staff members meet those students walking to school at various street corners and/or landmarks just a few blocks north, east, south and west of our Holmes School building location.

* Join a Walking School Bus - Parents and/or staff members are then  encouraged to formulate these (Walking School Buses). Adults are in the front and at the back of the walking buses and the students are in the middle of the walking buses. The buses are supervised by adults to further ensure the safety of all students as they walk and/or bike to school. Even if your child rides the school bus, try to make arrangements to join a Walking School Bus.

* Lead a Lunchtime Walk - Students unable to walk to school can participate in a walk around the block at lunchtime. Parents and Teachers can volunteer to walk with students and support healthy lifestyles.

I hope to see a large number of walking school buses on the morning of October 5th and both parent and staff members of our Holmes School boys and girls leading the charge for better health and evironmental safety! See you there!

I-Walk To School 2011

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL TO ALL OF OUR HOLMES SCHOOL BOYS, GIRLS, STAFF, AND PARENTS!!!!!!!

To kick-off this school year's fitness activities, Holmes School (physical education department) will be sponsoring our Annual I-Walk to School Day 2011 in October. So, make sure you come back to this blog mid-September for the actual date of the event and for all event details!

I (Mr. Williams) do look forward to seeing as many  girls, boys, parents, and staff members as possible participate in this years I-Walk event! Walking is one of the oldest sources of exercise that has been around for millions of years. The only other exercise that has been around even longer than that is crawling!

Hope to see a huge turn-out this October!

Mr. Williams
