Holmes Turkey Trot 2012: The Best Ever!

Holmes Students Set New School Record At Turkey Trot

Holmes students have once again shown why they reign supreme when it comes to participating in district and non-district health events. Nearly 100% of the Holmes school student body (K-5) participated in this years turkey trot event. K-1 students ran/walked a half mile distance with many of the kids going beyond their two lap expectation around the school playground area. Grades 3-5 participants showed a great increase in participation, more than any other of the 14 preceding years that I have been health and physical instructor at Holmes. Nearly every boy and girl completed the four lap requirement (one mile distance) around the school playground area, not one student did less than a half mile, every student both athletic and non-athletic finished at least 2 laps. The boys and girls at Holmes are really coming to understand many of the practical components geared towards living healthy lifestyles.

INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

The students will join kids and adults from all over the globe to celebrate joined efforts to walk to school, bring attention to the health, safety and environmental benefits of walking.

Thirty years ago over 66% of all children walked to school. Today only 13% of America’s children walk or bike to school. The prevalence of overweight children has tripled since 1980.  California studies show 21-22% of morning traffic is attributed to parents driving their children to school. Higher automobile speeds and increased traffic near schools put children at greater risk.

By encouraging the walk to school, we support an easy, healthy and fun way for children to travel to school. And you can help by:

  • Joining a Walking School Bus – A Walking School Bus is an adult supervised pedestrian group that walks together for the trip to school. Even if your child rides the school bus, try to make arrangements to join a Walking School Bus.

      *    Lead a Lunchtime Walk – Students unable to walk to school can participate in a walk around the block at lunchtime. Parents and Teachers can volunteer  to walk with students and support healthy lifestyles.

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!

No physical education curriculum should start without making

physical conditioning its top priority. Before any recreational

or sports game play, students should be taught how to

physically prepare their bodies for the physical challenges they

will encounter during the entire school year in gym class, at

recess as well as for intramural game and play activities outside

of gym class.

The students here at Holmes are on pace and off to another spectacular school year in Health and Fitness.

Gaining Momentum/Second Wind

As the last half of the school year blows by, the boys and girls at Holmes increases their momentum gaining  second winds for an explosive finish to our school year.

We are gearing up for National Sports and Fitness Week with our (2012) District 97 Fun Run at the focal point of  good health and fitness. The boys and girls at Holmes take good health and fitness pretty serious. Their numbers at the Fun Run each year proves just as much to be so.

We just rapped up our Gymnastic unit and are now on our Basketball unit.

March brings about our annual Staff vs. Parent basketball fundrasier game (March 10, 2012 @ Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School; 7pm) as well as our fun filled Staff vs. Student basketball game (March 23, 2012 @ Holmes; 1:15pm).
