INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

The students will join kids and adults from all over the globe to celebrate joined efforts to walk to school, bring attention to the health, safety and environmental benefits of walking.

Thirty years ago over 66% of all children walked to school. Today only 13% of America’s children walk or bike to school. The prevalence of overweight children has tripled since 1980.  California studies show 21-22% of morning traffic is attributed to parents driving their children to school. Higher automobile speeds and increased traffic near schools put children at greater risk.

By encouraging the walk to school, we support an easy, healthy and fun way for children to travel to school. And you can help by:

  • Joining a Walking School Bus – A Walking School Bus is an adult supervised pedestrian group that walks together for the trip to school. Even if your child rides the school bus, try to make arrangements to join a Walking School Bus.

      *    Lead a Lunchtime Walk – Students unable to walk to school can participate in a walk around the block at lunchtime. Parents and Teachers can volunteer  to walk with students and support healthy lifestyles.
